Pinon Wood Pinon is a cone-bearing evergreen tree. The
scientific
name for pinon is "pinus edulis". This tree is found primarily in New Mexico,
Arizona, Colorado, and Utah. Pinon is pronounced and often spelled "pinyon"
or "pinion". These trees were known to the Spanish as pinos pinoneros, or
"nut-bearing pine". For more background information on the
pinon tree, visit: http://www.canyondave.com/Pinyon.html http://www.50states.com/tree/newmexico.htm http://www.freenewmexican.com/news/52715.html Pinon wood is a favorite of most chiminea owners, for it's pleasant "pine aroma", which helps to repel mosquitoes and other flying insects. In the Southwest, piņon is a common fireplace and stove wood. It keeps an active flame, produces good heat, and burns well with other woods.
Alligator Juniper Wood Scientific name "Juniperus deppeana". Alligator Juniper is common in the dry mountain ranges of Arizona and New Mexico extending as far north as the San Francisco Peaks of Arizona and as far east as the Trans-Pecos region of western Texas. The species occurs on the dry rocky slopes of mountains within its range in association with piņon pines and other juniper species. When burning, the wood gives off a pleasant "cedar like" scent, and has a tendency to "crackle" and "pop". This wood is easy to start and provides a lively fire with little smoke. See more photos and info on Alligator Juniper at: http://museum.utep.edu/chih/gardens/plants/GtoM/junidepp.htm http://www.alligatorjuniper.com/
One Seed Juniper Wood Sometimes called "cedar", this drought-resistant juniper, grows along with piņon pine and alligator juniper through much of the of the Southwest. The bark is stringy or "shaggy" unlike alligator juniper bark. As a fire wood, one seed juniper burns similar to alligator juniper, with a crackling and popping sound with a similar "cedar" like aroma. Our bags of juniper wood will usually be blend both alligator juniper, and one seed juniper wood.
